Easing Into Activity Following Knee Replacement

As with any major surgical procedure, recovery is crucial, and a gradual increase in activity is suggested. However, how long must you wait to enjoy the activities you once did before your knee replacement?

Every patient is different, and his or her knee replacement recovery time will vary. When the surgery is complete and the patient has returned home, they must commit to an extensive rehabilitation regimen. Over the course of six to eight weeks, the patient will progress from small movements, such as stiff leg lifts, to walking greater distances.

It is key for patients to stay positive, take it slow, and work hard throughout rehabilitation to obtain the ultimate goal of returning to an active lifestyle.

You should always consult with a specialist before engaging in an activity. Here are some low-impact exercise ideas to think about when recovering from a knee replacement:

  • Cycling
  • Calisthenics
  • Swimming
  • Low-resistance rowing
  • Skiing machines
  • Walking & hiking
  • Low-resistance weightlifting
