The spine is a highly complex and critical component of the musculoskeletal system. Surrounding the spinal cord, the spinal column is made up of bones, ligaments, and shock-absorbing discs in five sections—the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), lumbar (lower back), sacrum (base of the back), and coccyx region (tailbone).
Since spinal injuries can affect any nerve, joint, or muscle, there is a wide range of conditions and injuries encompassed by neck and back pain and other symptoms.
From sacroiliac joint dysfunction, disc herniation, and scoliosis to spondylolisthesis and sciatica, spine, neck, and back pain can be a sign of a serious disorder.
It's important to seek treatment from a pain specialist as soon as possible before your injury or condition worsens if you have any of the following symptoms of neck or back pain:
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands, arms, or legs
- Other related bone, joint, or nerve pain or limitation
- Pain radiating from the back to the leg/foot
- Pain radiating from the neck to the arm/hand
- Pain that increases in the back, leg, or foot when standing or walking but is relieved by sitting

Our physical medicine and rehabilitation physician understands that damage to the spinal cord is not only disruptive but potentially devastating to patients. Spine conditions and injuries should be examined by a spine specialist for proper diagnosis to determine if spine surgery or nonsurgical treatments are needed.
Before working with patients in developing a treatment plan, our specialist will perform a physical examination and order imaging tests, such as X-rays, to determine the source of pain.
Many spine conditions are treated with nonoperative methods and procedures before surgery is considered. Our fellowship-trained physiatrist offers the following treatments for patients suffering from chronic back pain:
- Epidural steroid injections
- Facet joint injections
- Nerve blocks
- Sacroiliac joint steroid injections
